In one of the most closely watched House races in the nation, voters are faced with distinctive candidates offering competing visions for America. While we admire Katie Hill’s convictions, Steve Knight is the right choice for the district.
First elected to the House of Representatives in 2014 after serving in the state Legislature and on the Palmdale City Council, Knight has been comfortably elected and re-elected in the district.
That’s no small feat considering the growing shifts in the district, which went for Mitt Romney in 2012, but went for Hillary Clinton by an even larger margin in 2016.
To his credit, Knight has been a fairly consistent member of Congress. While on the one hand he has stood with his party on most of the big issues, including tax reform and repeal of Obamacare, he has also notably been a proponent of immigration reform.
Just this summer, Knight joined fewer than two dozen other Republicans in an attempt to force a vote on multiple immigration reform proposals to address the plight of young people protected under the DACA program.
In today’s polarized political landscape, it is a credit to Knight that he has been willing to stand out from many in the Republican Party in defense of a rational resolution to the problem of illegal immigration.
Knight’s challenger, Katie Hill, a first-time candidate and former executive of the nonprofit People Assisting The Homeless, offers an articulate and principled alternative to Knight.
But while we appreciate her commitment to healthcare reform and boosting assistance for people with mental health issues, we see no reason for voters to unseat Knight.That said, we think Knight should better back up claims on his website that the national debt is “a blatant act of generational theft.”
That’s true. But while we think Knight is more likely to contribute toward resolving that problem than Hill, we urge Knight to offer more solutions to this problem.
