Knight’s SECRET Act Signed Into Law, Reforming National Security Clearance Process

Congressman Steve Knight’s SECRET Act — a bill that reforms the way in which individuals and businesses can acquire security clearances when while working on government contracts — was signed into law Tuesday.

HR 3210, also known as the Securely Expediting Through Reporting Transparency act or, more commonly, the SECRET act, was signed into law by President Donald Trump May 22. The bill was designed to increase accountability in the security clearance process.

Aspects of the bill include the drafting of a report on the backlog and “excessive” wait times for security clearances currently being processed by the National Background Investigations Bureau, calling on the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to submit recommendations on how to improve the evaluation process and demanding that the Executive Office of the President report on the processes by which they determine how these security clearances are allocated for White House staff.

The information reported by CNN in November of last year indicated the President’s daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, both serving as senior advisers, were operating with interim access to top secret information in November. Ivanka Trump joined the administration in March, while Kushner joined when Trump entered office in January 2017.

On Wednesday, a day after Trump signed the bill into law, Kushner’s security clearance was reinstated.
