Knight Hosts Local Roundtables
This Monday, Reps. Steve Knight and Michael McCaul (TX-10), Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, met with law enforcement and community leaders in Santa Clarita and Simi Valley to discuss how Congress can continue to address issues like the opioid epidemic and human trafficking.
Two months ago, Knight helped pass the most sweeping package of legislation the House has considered to stop this country’s opioid crisis. As a member of the Bipartisan Heroin Task Force and the representative of a district deeply affected by the opioid epidemic, Knight has worked hard to give law enforcement and medical professions the tools to solve this problem.
“We have to keep working to stop the opioid crisis ‒ whether by stopping overprescription or giving law enforcement more tools. But I am proud of the work we have done to start the process of rolling back this epidemic,” Knight said.
Knight and McCaul have also been leaders on the issue of human trafficking. Both co-sponsored H.R. 1865, a bill which strengthens laws prohibiting online sex trafficking. This law passed both houses of Congress and was signed into law in April of this year.
Unfortunately, sex trafficking is a particularly important issue in Knight’s district. Northern Los Angeles County has become a choke point for trafficking across the United States, and legislation like H.R. 1865 is helping to stop this disturbing trend.
These issues both involve trafficking across the southern border, and Knight and McCaul both emphasized the importance of securing the border to stem the tide of drugs and human traffickers. Solving these problems is essential to the safety of our area, and Knight has proven that he is listening to local leaders in order to improve our community and other communities across the country.
